Construction in Comal County, TX by the numbers
Construction had more employer establishments than any other sector in Comal County in 2023: 689, employing 6,910 people with about $426.1 million in annual payroll. Of those employers, 422, or 61.2 percent, had fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023).
| Subsector | Employer establishments | Paid employees | Share under five employees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction of buildings (NAICS 236) | 225 | 1,093 | 76.4% |
| Specialty trade contractors (NAICS 238) | 406 | 4,689 | 55.2% |
| All construction (NAICS 23) | 689 | 6,910 | 61.2% |
Owner-operators are even more numerous. The county had 2,462 construction businesses with no paid employees in 2024, including 1,576 specialty trade contractors (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024). That survey covers a different year and population, so it should not be added to the employer counts.
The three tools contractors use
Construction financing for a contracting business, as opposed to a loan to build a single property, comes in three main forms. Each answers a different part of the cash cycle:
- Equipment financing for excavators, skid steers, trailers and work trucks, secured by the machine.
- A contractor line of credit to buy materials and meet payroll before each draw, repaid when the draw arrives.
- Working capital financing for a single, larger gap, such as mobilizing for a big job.
A merchant cash advance is not a loan and fits contractors poorly, because payments from builders arrive in lumps rather than daily card sales.
Draws, retainage and the payroll gap
On most building jobs, contractors bill in stages and are paid after the work is inspected and approved. Some contracts also hold back a percentage until the job is complete. Meanwhile, the crew is paid every week. The longer the approval chain, the larger the gap a contractor has to fund.
A line of credit suits this pattern because each draw can repay what was borrowed for that stage, and the limit becomes available for the next one. Our contractor cash flow notes show how to map those gaps week by week.
Residential building activity
Comal County authorized 3,249 new privately owned housing units in 2023, 3,430 in 2024 and 1,726 in 2025, all single-unit structures in 2025 (U.S. Census Bureau, Building Permits Survey). Those figures count new homes authorized, not contractor revenue, and they do not show where the work went. They do give a sense of how much residential building has moved through the county in recent years.
Financing construction equipment
Equipment is usually the largest single purchase a contractor makes. Partners ask for the quote or listing with make, model, year and hours, look at how the machine will earn its payments, and often prefer a down payment on used equipment. Comparing a loan, a lease and an EFA side by side is worth the time, and so is checking the payment before you call. The mini excavator payment calculator estimates a monthly payment and total cost from price, down payment, rate and term.
Government and public-sector work
Contractors bidding on public jobs often ask about financing for government contracts. The funding tools are the same: equipment financing, credit lines and working capital. What changes is the paperwork and timing. Public owners usually require formal pay applications and approvals, so ask the agency about its payment process before bidding and build that timing into your cash plan.
Inside a contractor's funding file
- Business bank statements showing deposits from draws and payments
- Tax returns or financial statements, ideally with job-level detail
- A list of current contracts, their values and expected payment dates
- A receivables aging report
- Equipment quotes, invoices or a list of existing machines and their liens
Every partner sets its own criteria. The local business profile gives ZIP-level counts around the office, and other sector pages cover restaurants and practices.
