Equipment financing lets a business buy or lease machinery, vehicles and fixtures with the equipment itself as collateral, repaid in regular payments over its useful life. Canyonwick Finance, a small-business funding broker in New Braunfels, TX, compares loans, leases and EFAs with owners and introduces requests to lending partners, which decide and set terms.

Loan, lease or EFA: three routes to a machine
| Structure | Owner while payments run | At the end | Often chosen when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equipment loan | Your business, subject to the partner's lien | The partner releases its lien at payoff | You plan to keep the equipment for its whole life |
| Lease | The lessor | Return it, renew, or buy at a set or fair-market price | Equipment ages quickly or you want to upgrade on a cycle |
| Equipment finance agreement (EFA) | You, under a contract rather than a traditional loan note | You own it outright after the last payment | A partner offers it as a simpler document for the same goal as a loan |
The tax and accounting treatment of each can differ. Ask your accountant before choosing, because that can tip the decision more than the payment does.
Equipment that local sectors finance
Comal County's employer base is heavy in the trades. The county had 689 construction employer establishments in 2023, more than any other sector (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Contractors finance compact track loaders, mini excavators, trailers and work trucks. To test a payment on a machine, try the mini excavator payment calculator.
Food service is the other large equipment buyer. The county counted 339 restaurants and other eating places as employers in 2023, and they finance ranges, fryers, walk-in coolers, hoods and point-of-sale systems. If you are weighing used kitchen gear, our notes on buying used restaurant equipment cover inspection and paperwork. In health care, the county had 151 offices of physicians and 73 offices of dentists as employers, which finance imaging units, chairs and sterilization equipment.
Used equipment
Partners do finance used equipment, but they look harder at it. Expect questions about age, hours or mileage, the seller, and whether there is an independent appraisal. Private-party purchases may need a bill of sale and a lien search to confirm the seller owns the equipment free and clear. Terms on older equipment are often shorter, since the collateral has less life left.
Contractor vehicles
Pickups, service vans and dump trucks used by a contracting business can be financed like other equipment, with the title showing the partner's lien until payoff. Canyonwick Finance does not arrange funding for trucking or freight-hauling businesses; our partners' confirmed sectors are construction, restaurants, medical and dental, and retail and inventory.
Equipment financing or a term loan
If the purchase is mostly one machine, equipment financing is the natural fit because the machine secures it. If the project mixes equipment with installation, remodeling and soft costs, a business term loan may cover the whole bill under one schedule. A line of credit can buy small tools, but large equipment on a line ties up the limit for years.
Installing heavy kitchen equipment or a medical imaging unit often needs permits or a remodel. Our premises checklist covers the questions to settle before the equipment arrives.
What partners usually ask for
- A quote or invoice with make, model, year and serial number
- For used equipment, photos, hours or mileage and sometimes an appraisal
- Recent business tax returns plus bank statements
- Proof of insurance on the equipment once purchased
- Owner identification and, for most partners, a credit check
No two partners use quite the same checklist. The sector pages show typical equipment needs by trade, the area business profile has local counts, and how a request works explains the steps.
